Screen Printing Tutorial

Cleaning the ink

One thing about silk screening that is never going to change is it can be rather messy. But with the right stuff you can clean it all up without a giant hassle. First off do yourself a favor and don't print over carpet you care about because most inks are meant to be permanent, same goes for clothes. So once you are all done printing use a palette knife to scrape all the ink you can back into your container. Set aside your palette knife and squeegee and pull off all the tape you put down on the screen, so all you have to clean up is the small area where you printed. Unless you are using water soluble ink, you probably need to get on-press ink cleaner. The on-press ink cleaner is good stuff and has taken out any of the types ink I have dealt with. I just put on a paper towel and scrub till all the ink is gone from both sides. Rubber gloves are a good idea with this stuff because the cleaner will really dry the hell out your hands. So then do the same thing to the squeegee and palette knife.

Cleaning out the emulsion

Now what needs to be done is you should clean the emulsion off the screen. This can be very easy or an extreme pain. The first key is to get emulsion remover and a scrub brush then to put the remover on and scrub both sides and let it sit for about a minute. The second key is lots of pressure, if you own a pressure washer awesome if not I really recommend going down to your local do-it-yourself carwash and set the puppy on rinse. Now if you want to be a real boy scout about it you can all get some screen degreaser. What this does is gets rid of all the stains left on your screen from the inks you use. It's a good idea to invest in it after awhile but you don't have to do it every time (also note that stuff is very dangerous, read the warnings and always use gloves). To save yourself time and energy, it is usually best to wash out your screens when you have a whole batch to do.

Finished prints

Here are a few samples of prints I have done in the past. These are all pretty standard, but note with the two color prints I had to change out my screen for every color on every shirt (which can be a pain). So have fun, be creative and pass along the silk screening knowledge you acquire.
